See the second part of our interview with Alvaro Fernandez, the co-author of The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness, a groundbreaking book that guides readers through the ever-growing field of brain fitness research and helps point out the lifestyle factors and products available on the market to help people keep their brains in shape. Eighteen of the top scientists in the brain fitness world were interviewed in order to produce this book that covers not only brain fitness, but also neuroplasticity and cognitive health—and over twenty products are assessed in its pages.

In the interview, Fernandez talks about his co-author and business partner, Elkhonon Goldberg, who had previously penned The Executive Brain: Frontal Lobes and the Civilized Mind, which was updated and re-printed this year and The Wisdom Paradox: How Your Mind Can Grow Stronger As Your Brain Grows Older. Both seminal works cover how the brain functions. Fernandez goes on to say how the information included in The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness was once a part of reports that were sent to larger institutions, such as hospitals and insurance companies, but due to price were outside the domain of most consumers. As such Goldberg and Fernandez set out to get the information into consumers' hands by changing it into an understandable format that was easily available to them. Fernandez makes the point that one of the most important aspects the book covers is the difference between mental activity, such as passively watching TV, versus mental exercise, such as figuring out a crossword puzzle or doing something that requires exertion—and how only mental exercise keeps our brains fit. He goes on to debunk common myths about the brain and brain fitness, including that cognitive decline is inevitable and that there is nothing that can be done about it.
